Heartburn and Acid Reflux Diet
Posted on 04/03/11 by adminMost people realize that their diet can have a big impact on their heartburn and acid reflux. Heartburn actually occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter or LES, relaxes and allows food or acid from your stomach back up into your esophagus. Trial and error is typically the method most people use to figure out what foods cause and relieve their heartburn.
What are some of the most common foods that help your heartburn? Below is a list of foods that are less likely to cause heartburn. Keep in mind this is just a guide and you should keep a diary of the foods that trigger and also soothe your heartburn.
apples, bananas,
broccoli, carrots, peas, green beans
chicken breast, fish
fat-free or low-fat cheeses
whole-grain bread, brown rice
Things you may want to avoid are foods and beverages that cause excess stomach acid, and by default cause acid reflux and heartburn such as:
caffeinated beverages
carbonated beverages
alcohol
spicy foods
black pepper
citrus fruit and juices (e.g., orange, grapefruit)
tomato juice
As mentioned earlier, your diet will vary based on our sensitivity to certain foods in our diet. In general, you will want to avoid eating processed and fried food and drink plenty of water. It is best to keep a diary or a log of foods that most trigger your heartburn. Proper planning of you daily diet can go a long way to helping your heartburn and controlling acid reflux.
